SHEEPMEAT COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA ANNUAL MUSTER 2014 29 INDUSTRY SYSTEMS & FOOD SAFETY Michael Craig SCA Director Michael is a mixed broad acre farmer in the big red-gum country at Harrow, western Victoria. The property currently runs a 30% crop rotation, combined with a sheep, wool and lamb business alongside a cattle breeding enterprise. Michael places an emphasis on developing innovative farm focused outcomes, including trial work involving alternatives to mulesing and being the host site for a sire evaluation program. Michael represents the sheepmeat industry on the NVD Management Committee and the Livestock Production Assurance Advisory Committee (LPAAC). Michael Craig -- SCA Director SAFEMEAT SAFEMEAT is a partnership between the red meat and livestock industry and the state and federal governments of Australia. This partnership ensures that Australian red meat and livestock products achieve the highest standards of safety and hygiene from the farm to the consumer. SAFEMEAT initiates research and development, develops communication linkages, monitors the status of Australia’s products, reviews standards and examines emerging issues that could have an impact on the industry in the future. SAFEMEAT encourages rationalisation of regulation and standards within the industry, drives the direction of strategies that ensure meat safety standards and hygiene and monitors industry performance in respect of these. SCA is a member of the SAFEMEAT Partners and SAFEMEAT Executive Committees. Key issues addressed by SAFEMEAT in 2013-2014 included; hormone growth promotant use; National Vendor Declarations; emergency animal disease management; and residue testing. SCA President Ian McColl represents sheepmeat producers on the SAFEMEAT Partners Committee.
