4 SHEEPMEAT COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA ANNUAL MUSTER 2015-16 The Council is made up of nine Directors drawn from its State Farmer Organisation (SFO) members. The Directors, who are volunteers and mostly active sheepmeat producers, represent the industry’s views at the national level. SCA members include the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF); NSWFarmers, Livestock South Australia (LSA); Agforce Queensland (Agforce QLD); Tasmanian Farmers & Graziers Association (TFGA); Western Australian Farmers Federation (WAFarmers); and the Pastoralists and Graziers Association of Western Australia (PGA of WA). SCA has numerous roles aimed at benefiting sheepmeat producers. One of these is to determine national policy for issues affecting sheep producers and Sheepmeat Council of Australia (SCA) was formed in 1979 and is the peak national body representing and promoting the national and international interests of Australian lamb and sheepmeat producers. to influence the Federal Government to achieve better outcomes for producers. The issues discussed by the Council relate to enhancing the Australian lamb and sheepmeat brand, providing tools which enable producers to increase farm gate returns and ensuring the long-term profitability of the industry. On behalf of producers, SCA monitors how Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), Animal Health Australia (AHA) and the National Residue Survey (NRS) spend the sheepmeat levy. SCA scrutinises the performance of these companies to ensure the best investment of the levy funds, and that producers are able to receive benefits at the farm gate. This is achieved through the Sheep Industry Strategic Plan (SISP). The SISP sets the goals for our industry and helps to coordinate the energy and resources. It allows priority setting for industry R&D and marketing activities both domestically and internationally. It is developed through consultation with farmers and by assessing the opportunities in our global markets. Some of the achievements of the 2010- 2015 SISP include the expansion of the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) program and increasing carcase weights by developing better genetic and breeding tools for producers. By using this approach the Australian sheepmeat industry has moved from a domestically-focused industry to one now worth $3.9 billion dollars and heavily focused on exports.
