Sheepmeat Council : Sheepmeat 2012
SHEEPMEAT COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA ANNUAL MUSTER 2012 35 implementation and level of awareness. Those using the SHS had positive attitudes towards its use, suggesting that if it became part of standard practice they would be likely to appreciate its benefits. Knowledge of oJD prevalence areas The survey identified inaccurate self- reporting of OJD prevalence areas, with a general tendency of sheep producers to underestimate their flock's Prevalence Area; accuracy ranged from 17-63% for different States and Prevalence Areas. In addition around 80% of producers were confident that their self-reported prevalence was correct. As flock OJD prevalence area is a core component of the Assurance Based Credit (ABC) score calculation on the SHS the relatively poor level of accuracy reported in the survey was identified as an area that needed to be addressed. This project was funded by MLA. The research was conducted by Mel Taylor, School of Medicine, University of Western Sydney, Navneet Dhand, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, The University of Sydney, and Alison Lee, Victoria Department of Primary Industries. Further details of the study and a link to the fnal report are available on the MLA website. www.mla.com.au/Research- and-development/Final-report- details?projectid=15130 INSPECT STOCK BEFORE PURCHASE QUARANTINE NEW SHEEP ON PROPERTY FOR -10 DAYS MONITOR SHEEP, AT LEAST TWICE WEEKLY RECORD ALL MOVEMENTS OF SHEEP ON AND OFF YOUR FARM INSPECT AND REPAIR FENCES TO KEEP THEM SHEEP PROOF REQUEST ALL VISITOR WASH HANDS/CLEAN BOOTS BEFORE COMING INTO PADDOCK/CONTACT WITH SHEEP CONSULT A VET IF YOU NOTICE SOMETHING UNUSUAL OR SUSPECT DISEASE IN YOUR SHEEP ENSURE THAT ANY EQUIPMENT OR MACHINERY BROUGHT ONTO YOUR PROPERTY IS CLEAN MONITOR SHEEP FOR SIGN OF DISEASE INSPECT STOCK ON ARRIVAL 40% 60% 100% 80% 0% 20% USUALLY ALWAYS OCCASIONALLY NEVER RARELY FIGURE 1 Frequency of performing a range of on-farm disease management and biosecurity practices.
