8 SHEEPMEAT COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA ANNUAL MUSTER 2013 Ovine Johne's Disease The work around Ovine Johne's Disease (OJD) has been a major focus for us with the July 1 implementation of the National OJD Management Plan 2013 -2018. The Plan was developed by SCA and WoolProducers Australia (WPA) following extensive consultation. It will help producers take a risk-management approach to their farm biosecurity. A key feature of the Plan is the new Sheep Health Statement (SHS), which provides important information when buying stock. Live Export The livestock export sector is a major contributor to the profitability of our industry, and it underpins markets across the country. Live sheep exports are especially important to the Western Australian industry, which accounted for 80% of Australia's total sheep exports in 2012. Australian sheep are in high demand in export markets due to our reputation as a reliable supplier of high quality product. In 2012, Australia exported over 2.2 million sheep worth approximately $280 million. The Middle East is our largest mutton and live sheep market and is also a growing market for lamb. SCA has devoted significant effort in supporting the live trade. The Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) is seen by Council as a priority and we have been a part of the Industry Government Implementation Group. ESCAS ensures that animals are treated to international standards (OIE). Recent incidents of livestock cruelty in overseas markets are unacceptable and disturbing for all those involved in the livestock sector. It is of great concern to the sheepmeat sector as the trade is an important part of our industry. Australia remains the only country in the world that invests in improving animal welfare in the countries to which we export livestock. We believe our ongoing involvement in the livestock export trade provides an opportunity to influence animal welfare conditions in overseas countries. Market Access Market access is our key priority. Working with our international partners is a high priority and SCA is committed to improving these relationships with the goal of increasing the consumption of Australian sheepmeat. The Middle East continues to be Australia's largest export region for mutton and lamb exports, with export volumes showing significant growth, an encouraging sign given competition and economic factors. We will continue to work with other industry stakeholders to strengthen our relations with our Middle Eastern trading partners, and to open up new markets in the region. The United States continues to be our single highest value export market. Signs of economic recovery are reflected in growth of 6.8% for the 2012 calendar year. It is expected that with rising consumer confidence there will be modest growth in the U.S market this year. However, with strong demand from the Middle East and China, exporters are likely to favour those regions over the U.S. An important part of our market access work is the Tri-Lamb partnership. 2013 marks the tenth anniversary of the Tri-Lamb partnership between SCA, American Sheep Industry Association and Beef + Lamb New Zealand. This partnership seeks to increase consumption of lamb in the United States through knowledge sharing and coordinated marketing campaigns. SCA has encouraged an increased focus on opening markets in Asia. China is becoming a major destination for Australian sheepmeat products and the demand for quantity and quality continues to increase. Growth into 2014 is expected to continue. However, it is unclear whether this will translate into higher prices, given large volumes of NZ product entering China at a lower tariff rate. Recent work in the Indian market shows a lot of promise. With a population of over 1.241 billion people and a rapidly growing middle class, India is a natural market for sheepmeat. Significant opportunities exist, particularly in the high end retail and food service sectors. Like Australia, India is a net exporter of red meat. The country has the largest cattle population in the world at around 304 million head and in the last three years has surpassed Australia, Brazil and the U.S. to become the world's leading exporter of beef.
