Sheepmeat Council : Sheepmeat 2013
SHEEPMEAT COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA ANNUAL MUSTER 2013 27 INVASIVE ANIMALS COOPERATIVE RESEARCH CENTRE if we’re to stop the rangeland sheep industry from being relegated to the history books. National Rabbit Management Facilitator There is a worrying trend that rabbit numbers are again on the increase. Mr Andreas Glanznig, CEO of Invasive Animals CRC, said that biological control of rabbits, along with coordinated community action, will be increasingly important to keep on top of the worsening rabbit problems. There is extensive work program ahead for the National Rabbit Management Facilitator position working to promote effective rabbit and integrated pest management involving groups of land managers and to build on successes to date to ensure wider uptake of what works. A National Rabbit Management Facilitator together with rabbit projects focusing on biological control are a priority for research into the country’s worst vertebrate pest – the wild rabbit. Mr Glanznig said that rabbits caused production losses of more than $200 million per year and threatened more than 75 nationally threatened plant species and five threatened ecological communities. To assist landholders to better control wild rabbits and wild dogs, the Invasive Animals CRC has published two guides: 1. PestSmart: Glovebox Guide for Managing Rabbits available free to download at <http://www.feral.org.au/wp-content/ uploads/2013/01/RabbitGBG_web. pdf>. 2.
